With a room full of laughter and smiles, Girls Empowering Girls hosted their first meeting of the year on September 17. The first meeting focused mainly on getting to know each other and understanding the significance of the club. Not only were names exchanged, but facts, cherished talents, and fond memories were also shared.

Not only does Girls Empowering Girls have a special significance to one of the sponsors, Sandra Sanchez, but the message within will surely have an impact on each of the members. Sanchez initiated the meeting by being open about what she hopes to transmit through the club. Her personal experiences shape her point of view and they also give her the strength to help girls see what they’re capable of.

“I was in a very unhealthy relationship, where I turned to food as a sort of comfort. I gained a lot of weight and it wasn’t until a good friend of mine made me realize my potential, that I took the initiative to change for myself. I got more involved in the community, I went back to school to study a profession that I was passionate about, and I ran a marathon,” she said.

After sharing this powerful message, the meeting switched focus to introductions. Participants could share things as little as what grade they were in to more in-depth descriptions, such as their aspirations in life.  There was a friendly atmosphere and although not everyone was from the same grade level, encouragement and praise were given by both sides.

The club is open to new faces and hopes to greet more interested girls.
