Extra Classes

Today, Monday April 10th, advocacy will be frozen for the first 15 minutes so juniors can pick their new electives for next school year. They will be asked to pick their top three choices of classes for next year, there are about 50 new classes to choose from. The class times for next year won’t be that different. The classes are going from 97 minutes to 84 minutes. The school start and end times will not change. “I think it will open up more opportunities for students to take new classes that they want to take,”  Mr. Padgett said. Padgett feels that more classes will help students learn about more things that they are interested in. Padgett also said that with more classes students could even get enough credits to graduate early.  “Some teachers feel that shorter classes will affect their content but, if a student can take two of those teachers’ classes they will actually have a better understanding of the teacher’s content.”  Said Mr. Padgett he feels this change will help students’ discover new things and understand their classes better. “Students and teachers felt that the ninety seven minute classes were too long and the teachers felt they couldn’t hold the students attention for that long, and you know this generation has grown up with cell phones and tablets and everything so something always is changing, so it’s harder for them to focus that long, and hopefully with shorter classes and more variety the students can focus better.” Head Counselor Carolos Cottner said.   The junior extra class choices include, English Recovery, Creative writing, Speech, Anthropology, U.S. Ethnic studies, International studies, African American history, Psychology, Sociology, Zoology, Digital Video production, Aerobics and fitness, Game design , Apparel production, ect.
