State Fair Competition Results

Wichita North High school had the opportunity to participate in the Kansas State Fair Scholastic Press Corps 2017 Competition. Ten students were selected to go. These ten students were split into two groups, representing the print and video team. The print team consisted of Marlen Castaneda, Carrington Tackitt, Chloe Goerzen, Nate Bruce, and Rosalia Salazar. Those on the video team were Caleb Solis, Tate Miller, Layla Sabrah, April Draut, and Seleste Montanez. Both of these teams had certain stories they needed to have done by the end of the day. The print team had to have a lead story, an agriculture story and two free choice stories. The video team had to have ninety second lead, sixty seconds worth of agriculture, and a free choice story of thirty seconds.

The video team was assigned to do their lead story over domestic arts. Their agriculture story was over pollination gardens and their free choice was over the horse show. The first judge scored them at 195, saying they had “beautiful quotes” and did “a good job emphasizing the judging.” The second judge scored them at 133 points. Team leader Randy Griffits was asked about their performance and what they could’ve improved, he said “the story we did about owning a horse would’ve been better if she rode the horse, i wish we could’ve gotten an action shot.”

The print team chose their free choice stories to be about Emily and her horse and a camel. Their assigned stories were electrical safety and tractors. Overall they scored 191 and 189. Judges said it was “refreshing to see” and “overall did a good job.” They placed 3rd out of all the schools that went and also won best lead story. Rosalia said “I thought it was very fun, she (Emily Gauler, a student at North High) was in her natural setting and that was very cool.”
