Fashionetta is an event for high school seniors to obtain funds for college around the Wichita area. Fashionetta is put on by the Beta Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. This year, 21 girls participated. “It’s a six month program, we signed up at the beginning of June,” Senior Jayla Smith said. “They had a slumber party and various community service activities and workshops over the summer.” Practice would take place after school and on Sunday afternoons. The students learned different dances, songs and how to model. “Fashionetta compiles scholarships for us “pearls” who are involved. So if 9 of us complete a scholarship then the pool of who gets it is smaller,” Smith said. All the girls who sign up are referred to as Pearls. Jayla was being called Pearl Jayla her full name Peral Jayla Mae Lilianna Smith. She got involved by getting a pass to go to the CCC at the beginning of last year. Ladies from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority came and spoke to them. They had until June to be 100% committed to join. Jayla was one of the 14 people who got a scholarship for her GPA.
