High School needs snack time

Letter to the Editor

Dear North Star,

This school has a great activity level in it, with the three levels, long hallways, and physical education, JRTOC, and band. As many high school students who have these classes and enjoy them thoroughly, it’s quite a workout for some. And on the same note, it’s no wonder the majority of the building goes starving to the lunch line instead of just going hungry. It’s a wonder that especially during 5th and 6th hour more stomachs aren’t singing, gurgling and groaning symphonies.  The thing that puzzles me is how kindergarteners get a snack time and high school students who have to wait an extremely long time to eat and sometimes can’t, don’t get any form of a snack during the day unless we go to buy it ourselves.  Most people don’t have money to waste to spend on vending machines every time they hear their stomach begin to growl and holler. So I purpose that high school classes need to have a snack period in one of the classes.

If you consider how each body works, you realize it’s completely different for everyone. But what stays the same is that usually the more calories and fats you burn off during a day or even an hour, you start to get hungry fairly quickly. For the more active sports body, they would need more food than the regular high school student receives in a day. The large amount of stairs and walking throughout the day also runs down your energy levels and creates food to be burnt off quickly. If there was a snack period during the day, preferably before lunch some time, kids would feel rejuvenated and replenished enough to wait un-anxiously for lunch thus increasing the amount of brain power that goes into school work.

Learning about college, about real life and the “real world” makes me especially appreciate the value of a dollar. I know unless a child has their own job or source of money, it can be hard to come by at times. It especially can’t be blown on the outrageous prices of the vending machines and especially not every day of the school week. Students understand this and go hungry for long periods; especially if there was no time to eat breakfast before school. Let’s face it; kids need to eat! If they don’t, they get cranky, rude and uninterested.  Proving a snack for all would help with all of these problems. It could even help teachers with their frustration over students and their lack of participation or care.

This world can be fixed by food, it already has been. It helps a lot in ways of health, focus and strength. Everyone needs food, but don’t always get it, even at school lunch. A snack for the students would be extremely beneficial in every way mentioned. It is something the school should deeply consider. It could change school in great ways.
