Boxer delivers ‘Awesome’ speech

Carrington Takitt and Frida Loera

Students got the opportunity to hear from motivational speaker, and former boxer Cam F. Awesome. Awesome has won the U.S. Title in 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2014, he has also won the Golden Gloves in 2009, 2011, 2013. When Awesome decided his career was over, he decided to travel the country speaking to students “Boxing has instilled confidence and personal accountability in me. I’m forever grateful for boxing’s lessons. For the past couple of years I’ve been speaking at school assemblies about lessons that boxing has taught me and how those translate into lessons outside of the ring when it comes to chasing a dream or dedicating yourself to a career,” Awesome said. He talks about his journey leading up to him starting boxing, his struggles in between and why he ended things. “Boxing has taught me the harsh realities of the world. Boxing has taught me the discipline to appreciate and strive for delayed gratification. Boxing didn’t teach me how to be a speaker, or a comedian or about diet and exercise. It taught me the consequences of slacking off.” He also decided to come to North High and talk about things such as anti-bullying, drug-free living, healthy and active life styles, how to use social media as an educational tool and not just a distraction, personal accountability, the drive it takes to chase a dream and the resilience required to achieve it. Awesome will continue his speaking career by going around the country and giving motivational speeches to all kinds of students.
