One step closer to recycling

Amberli Jimerson, Melissa Ornelas and Riley Sipes were recently awarded a grant to help the recycling program at North, after counting and finding out that there are only seven recycling bins and 50 trash cans. “Most of the recycling bins didn’t say recycling and the ones that did were turned around where you couldn’t see it,” Amberli said. After learning about the grant, they decided to apply, asking for money for new recycling bins and biodegradable trash bags.

Amberli got the idea after noticing that North doesn’t recycle as much as Portland, Oregon, where she use to live. she asked Melissa and Riley to help her with the program. The only recycling the school really had was paper, and “the recycling bins and trash cans are the same color, so you could easily mistake them. The new recycling bins will be different colors,” she said. They plan to make posters showing where the recycling bins are located after winter break.

“I’m excited! I didn’t even know we were getting the grant!” said Amberli. The grant will be used to get 50 blue recycling bins and 500 biodegradable trash bags. “We hope that the people will start to notice the recycling bins and start recycling,” Melissa said.
