The 12th of December is an important event in the Catholic Church celebrating Our lady of Guadlupe, the patron saint of Mexico.  

Festivities demonstrate faith and gratitude with dances and music to honor the Virgin of Guadalupe.  

On this day, a traditional indigenous dance called Danza is shown to expresses culture and faith through the dancer’s movement and religious beliefs. 

The attire is deeply symbolic representing both heritage and tradition with bright colors, patterns and feathered head wear representing diversity of the Indigenous cultures. For many dancers, including students in our community, this day is a chance to feel pride in who they are and carry forward a tradition that has been passed down for generations.  

North Senior Mariana Andrade is a member of Sagrado Corazón Danza. Being around others who share the same beliefs is something that she cherishes.

“I like danza because of the community it brings. We share a goal to show love and devotion and faith toward the Virgin Mary while supporting one another.”
