North had three female runners qualify for the state meet last Saturday. Senior Alexa Ornelas won her regional, defeating the second-place finisher by 14 seconds, which was held at Brown Thrush Park. Ornelas stated that it felt very rewarding.
“My race went pretty well! I did not lead the whole time. I started in third and slowly made my way up to the top, the first half of the race.” Ornelas said.
It wasn’t the cleanest race Ornelas has run.
“During the race, I struggled with a side stitch. It hurt a lot. I also struggle a little mentally at the end but I stayed tough until I made it through the finish.” Ornelas said.
Going to state with Ornelas are Sophomores Mia Hirsch who ended in fifth place and Nelly Puente who ended in eleventh place.
“I was very happy for them! It felt nice to have other people alongside me make state!” Ornelas said.
The state track meet will be held at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence, Kansas. Saturday, October 28th.
