The Varsity volleyball team recently competed last Saturday in their first tournament of the year and finished in 3rd place under the instruction of Coach Jessica Keys. Team chemistry was evident in the team’s play early in the year. Mia Maples, the Senior Libero was mentioned frequently by her teammates and coaches due to how strong her defense was. Their one and only setter, Emily Hynes was also putting in quite the work, having to run all around the court, “It was kind of stressful, I was a bit dizzy and delusional over half of our games… At one point I got hit in the face,” she said. Thankfully, she’s been in tip top shape since then.

These girls spoke highly of their fellow teammates and were likeminded when it came to their goals. Stating that they were looking forward to playing schools such as Northwest, Bishop Carroll, and Kapaun High.

“Those would be really great games,” Hynes stated. “Since I’ve been here, we’ve lost to Northwest every single year and I think this is our year to shine.”

Maples also confidently believes their season could come out as one of their bests, “Our defense has improved a lot over the summer, we could win the games we fell short in.”

With their highly anticipated season in mind (and currently in motion), the team is hoping for big crowds at all their matches. Junior right-side hitter Cora Daggett said, “Come out to our games! We need that cheering and yelling and if we have themes y’all can dress up for those themes.” The next home game will be Tuesday, September 5th at 5pm (this upcoming Tuesday!) The traditional gym might’ve been hot and discouraging, but thankfully the new gym is cold and inviting and the stands are ready to be filled for your 2023 Redhawks!

Special Shout-Outs
