First Performance Under a New Director

The drama department held play auditions this last week on Wednesday and Thursday for a play called “She Kills Monsters.” The last performance our school had was “Little Shop of Horrors” and this was before the Covid-19 shut down that happened in March 2020.

Not only is “She Kills Monsters” the first performance we are going to have since Covid hit, but it is also the first performance that Mr. Norfleet is going to be directing. Mr. Norfleet is the new drama teacher who replaced Mr. Galbreath (who retired) last year.

More students attended auditions on Wednesday and Thursday than in previous years.

Mr. Norfleet is also handling auditions differently than how Mr. Galbreath did. An example of this is that Mr. Galbreath would give us the script and let students choose what character they wanted to audition to be and then he would bring them on stage, and they would audition for that character.

Shown here is the current director of the drama department, Kevin Norfleet and to the right is stage manager Kadence Westly.

However, Mr. Norfleet had the students that want to audition wait outside and he would call a few people in and have them audition for a character that he chose, so that he can see what people work well with what character.

There were a lot of first-time jitters with auditions as a lot of people were either nervous, too quiet, or had trouble reading the script fluently.

One student who was auditioning for the first time was Junior Diana Colchado. “For my first time doing this, I thought I did really well,” she said.
