Is This Hobby for You?

Do you love being creative? Making things your own? Then this could be your newest hobby.

If you’ve ever mindlessly scrolled through you might have stumbled across something called thrift flipping.

Thrift flipping is taking older clothes and revamping them to have a more modern style or more suited to your personal taste. You can do this by changing the length of a dress that’s too long, fitting a pair of jeans to your size, or even make something completely new like a fashionable shirt made from a skirt. It’s a great way to not waste clothes and come up with your own unique style that can’t be found anywhere else.

You can upcycle anything, whether it’s a shirt that you no longer wear but still like the pattern of or an ill-fitting jacket, as long as you have basic sewing skills

Thrifting is a good way to save money. You can buy something for cheap at a thrift store and transform it into something wonderful, all from the comfort of your own home.

It is also a good way to reduce clothing waste. Thanks to the fast fashion trend of the past few years instead of buying clothes that are meant to last we buy clothes that are trendy or popular that either won’t last for long or that we quickly grow bored of and move on from.

With thrift flipping you can create something sustainable that you love.

You can thrift at in-person thrift stores, online second-hand shops estate sales, and more.

Here in Wichita it’s places like Goodwill, Assistance League of Wichita, Disabled American Veterans, and plenty more.

One of the best things about thrift flipping is that you don’t have to be an expert!

If you’re only making small adjustments, then you only need basic sewing skills and anything else you want to learn is an easy YouTube search away.

There are hundreds of tutorials and fellow flippers to be inspired by. For inspiration and motivation I suggest bestdressed’s series on thrift flipping.

If you do decide to give this hobby a try, have fun and enjoy the things you create!
