Boys Wrestling GWAL

Davina Alvarez, Reporter

Saturday, February 15th the boys wrestling team GWAL took place at North High school. “ It was a pretty good tournament for us. Last year was the first time we had a kid in the championship in the last 6 or 7 years. This year we actually had two kids in the championship: Jackson Stroud and Cody Meraz,“ said Coach Burgess

Both of the boys had really tough matches and both ended up in the finals. “ Jackson had a kid he’d already beat twice, we ended up with two 2nd place finishers. “ – Burgess

Varsity wise, Cruz Alvarado finished 4th. There were also seven guys on JV who either finished 3rd or 4th. “I think that’s one of the bigger JV turn ups we’ve had in the last couple years for sure, “ said Burgess. “Overall, all of our kids wrestled pretty well throughout the day. There’s obviously a few things that we need to work on. We had good attitude and good effort and that’s all we can ask for.“

North boys finished in 7th place with a score of 54.0.

The varsity boys leave for regionals today, which are held in Topeka. “We got a couple guys that have a really good chance on making it to state. This is what we’ve been working for. It’s time to put up and wrestle, “  said Burgess.
