Lately on YouTube there is a trend that is going on called Mukbangs. A Mukbang is an online audiovisual broadcast in which a host eats large amounts of foods while interacting with their audience. This trend first started in South Korea in early 2010.

There are many food options to eat in front of the camera while you talk about yourself or your opinions on trending topics. Hosts interact with their viewers in the chatrooms that are in that broadcast. The word Mukbang is a combinaiton of the Korean words for “eating” 먹기 and “broadcasting”방송.

This trend became big in 2016 and has continued. Mukbangs are a hobby for many people who enjoy food or eating. Most of the time, Mukbang hosts film their videos at home in front of an electric burner or several containers of delivered food.

Mukbang may not have the same pop culture popularity here in the U.S., but watching people eat thousands of calories in a single sitting has grown into a full-blown viral sensation. A YouTuber named Trisha Paytas has become well-known for her Mukbangs.“I just started doing videos and since then, it’s grown from being an eating show to a place where I talk about being positive and why it’s important to be a good person. I’ve made so many connections with people, not only because they want to eat with me, but also because they like what I have to say,” she said in an interview.
