In order to win this award, the students’ piece must be entered upon teachers recommendation. Laurel Franklin won using her piece titled “Fish Tank”, basically a fish with a tank on top of it. The piece went to the scholastic panel and was judged by several artists. Out of the three awards, gold key, silver key, and honorable mention, she won a gold key. Last year she get an honorable mention, but this year when she got a call from Tina Thomas, an art teacher at North, she found out she got a gold key. “I was really excited, it’s a pretty big deal” Franklin said. The piece is later showcased in Mark Arts which is a national competition. All the gold key winners’ pieces will be sent to Washington D.C. for a national show.
