After much anticipation, the TV show ’13 Reasons Why’ premiered this past Friday on Netflix and immediately caught viewers’ attention. The show is based on the book ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ by Jay Asher and is about high schooler Hannah Baker who commits suicide and sends out 7 tapes (used front and back) to 13 different people explaining why she killed herself. Those people being her 13 reasons why.
The book is told from Clay Jensen’s point of view, one of Hannah’s reasons. But the TV show expands from the books perspective and gives viewers a greater view on what every character is going through before and after Hannah’s death.
13 Reasons Why, in my opinion, is a fantastic show. It covers real and tough topics that no one really likes to talk about like sexuality, bullying, slut-shaming, mental health, sexual assault and suicide. Also, not to mention that it stars a incredible group of diverse actors that are remarkable in their respective roles. Lead actors Dylan Minnette (Clay Jensen) and Katherine Langford (Hannah Baker) are fantastic in the show accompanied by an amazing supporting cast that includes Kate Walsh (Mrs. Baker), Christian Navarro (Tony Padilla), Miles Heizer (Alex Standall) and Alisha Boe (Jessica Davis).
From a person who read the book first’s point of view, I would give this show 9.5/10 stars just because of small changes that producers made from book to TV show that I think they should have kept. Overall, this show is real, it talks about real world topics and issues facing teenagers today. If you want a show that’s real, watch Thirteen Reasons Why.
