Girls Golf qualifies for state

When girls golf coach Scott Baxter heard the news, he couldn’t believe it.

For the first time in decades, the girls golf team qualified for the Class 6A tournament.

“A little bit shock, a little bit excitement, a little bit of awe,” Baxter said, describing how he felt when he was told his team had qualified.

North finished with a score of 422, good enough for fourth place at the Hutchinson regional. Alayna Welch placing in 8th with a score of 98 and Isabella Martinez placing in 10th with a score of 100, both of them medaling.

Playing a difficult city league schedule prepared the team for regionals.

” I think the girls had worked very hard , we got enough experience now. Honestly they the played the city league tournaments against teams that were really, really, really good and in some ways I think it was almost deflating to them because they were getting beat by so much each week, but at the same time I think it was teaching them that you just got to stick with it”.

The team will be traveling to Emporia for state and will be playing at Emporia Municipal Golf Course on Monday morning.
