Meet Cheer coach Bria Tucker
January 29, 2021
This is Bria Tucker’s first time at North High but she is not a teacher. She is the new 2020-2021 Varsity Cheer Head Coach.
Tucker went to Northwest High School and she was a member of their dance team. She went to college at Fort Hays State University and was also a member of their dance team. She is attending Fort Hays State online where she is graduating this May with a bachelor of liberal arts with a concentration in education and psychology.
Next year she plans on attending Kansas State and pursue a masters of arts in teaching program. She is going to school to teach secondary English while she coaches at North.
When asked what she liked about North, she said that she has worked in a lot of Wichita Public Schools at the high school level and elementary level and North high has a different feeling when you walk in. It’s not really explainable until you do it. She also mentions that North high has a lot of school spirit.
Coach Bria has always wanted to be involved in cheer, even after college.
“I’ve always been involved in the spirit squad at schools, but dancing in college makes it very hard to afford to live since it’s so demanding of your time with little money in return. Coaching allows me to still be apart of something I love and create opportunities for those students who are not as fortunate as others to be able to afford to do cheer and dance outside of school.”
The last question I asked the coach was what has being a cheer coach taught you and she said was “it taught me what it actually means to be a role model. I’m not very old but (for the most part) have my life together. I think it’s important for girls…especially girls of color to have someone to look up to.”
If you would like to be apart of an AMAZING family the tryout dates for cheer are March 31st through April 2nd it’s a three-day tryout, the first two days are clinics and the third day is the actual tryout. They are not looking for people who have the experience, they are looking for people who are willing to learn, ready to work hard, and who wants to show school spirit.
