Girls golf coach Scott Baxter has been at the helm since 2001. He has experienced a lot as the head coach, but one thing had alluded him.
The girls golf team won it’s first City League tournament in Baxter’s tenure, defeating the other 259 schools in the first tournament of the season at Rolling Hills golf course.
The key to North’s success was consistency. Lauren Busch placed third, Alayna Welch placed fourth, Isabella Martinez placed fifth and Maley Hansen finished sixth. The tournament was nine holes.
“A little bit of a surprise,” Baxter said of the win. “East and Northwest have a couple of really strong individuals. Zoey Lee shot 1 under, so East had a good head start. I had some of my early finishers not have a great night so initially I thought we might be in a little bit of trouble. Lauren Busch shot a 42 and finished 3rd overall, Alayna Welch (4th place) and Isabella Martinez (6th place) were both right behind her with a 44’s. Maley Hansen (7th place), who was playing her first golf tournament in the 6 spot, shoots a 47 and seals the win. Really pretty exciting.”
Baxter credited the fact that the girls remained calm throughout the round.
“Perseverance is what they did well. I think they all had a hole out there where they posted a big number,” Baxter said. “Sierra Hills is not a long course but the rough is incredibly thick and the greens are very small. If you miss a fairway or green it is hard to hit and chip out of the rough and get the ball close to the hole. Sim Park does not have this kind of rough, so this was a challenge all night. Anyway, nobody lost focus after their little setbacks and kept moving forward, which is nice.”
